Description: Even after the end of the First World War, there is a marked feeling of hostility and resentment on the German-French border. Despite this, the German miners come to the rescue when a mining accident occurs on the French side. Foreman Wilderer, who was turned down by a Frenchwoman at a dance the day before, decides to help too. Wilderer and two colleagues advance through a connecting tunnel into the French side, where they tear down the grate which has marked the border since the war. The workers put their lives at risk when flooding strikes, but in the end they too - together with two French colleagues – are saved.
