  • Beskrivelse: Self-absorbed Zoi, mistress of a soldier, betrays her lover and marries the Emperor of Byzantium. Later on, she persuades her husband to send away her lover (and his devoted general) to the isolated fortress of Monemvasia. When the astrologers foretell the end of the world and even determine the date, the now-Empress Zoi, instead of maintaining her position at the side of her husband, prefers to spend the last days of her life with her former lover. The appointed doomsday arrives, but nothing happens. The Emperor then spreads the news of Zoi’s death. As soon as she finds out, she returns to Constantinople to reclaim her position. The oft-betrayed lover, however, cannot tolerate this fresh humiliation, and just before she leaves, he kills her without hesitation.
